I've been serving a sentence (sarcasm) in retail for over a decade and one of the most important aspects of the bottom line is sell-through. Sell-through is how long a product sits on your shelf before it sells. Larger items don't necessarily have to sell quickly in order to be successful, but in a line of smaller products with multiple skus, the longer it sits, the more it costs.
We carried a product from France that sold well around the holiday season, it sold well when we discounted the product, and we were constantly having to keep the fuel on sale in order to move the product quickly. We would get "low" on certain fragrances, while other fragrances would sit for months at a time before someone purchased. As this company continued to raise their wholesale and retail cost, it eventually became clear that there was either an issue with the company remaining solvent, an issue with product design, or a bigger picture issue- the company was attempting to be a premium product but didn't have the goods to back up their high price tag.
Our solution- make the same product in the USA. We already had a companion chemical company that made private label products for distributors in our field, we also have our own line of bottled chemicals for my stores, why not expand our repertoire and make a catalytic lamp fuel and product? What ended up happening was a beautiful marriage of retail price point and product. We were able to make our fuels hotter, scents bolder, and created an immediate demand.
Impulse vs. Special Occasion
Catalytic lamps have been reduced to a "better candle" as opposed to being marketed for their ability to truly eliminate airborne germs and odors. This product actually serves a highly useful purpose to consumers who are concerned about indoor air quality. We intend to grow this product as an air purification lamp as opposed as an alternative to a candle.
We've been able to partner with a manufacturer of lamps and create our USA made fuels to keep the cost low enough that this product is no longer a "special occasion" purchase. It is now an easy impulse sale that will increase your bottom line without lingering on the shelves or requiring a salesperson to spend labor hours selling the product.
Our Selection
We will continue to experiment with various scents to add to our collection. Our goal is not to create a product line so large that it is impossible for the average store to carry all of the products.
We invite and encourage your suggestions for scents and lamp styles. We are currently building this product line, and dealer input is what we love!
